Coolest Pharaoh Costume

This year for Halloween, I wanted to do something that was different, unique, but at the same time instantly recognizable. Since I have always been fascinated by ancient Egypt, I decided to take on the challenge of becoming the King of the Nile. The Pharaoh costume only cost me 13 dollars and I received many complements on it. I feel very proud of my work.

Since I am in college and have neither sewing experience nor a sewing machine, I assembled my costume using safety pins. However, I am sure that you could sew the costume just as easily. All I had to buy was 2 yards of white fabric, half a yard of blue and gold striped fabric, some gold ribbon and some safety pins. To make the headdress I started with a simple black sweat band. I cut my length of striped fabric in half, so I had a long rectangle of fabric. I then cut into the center from one of the short sides of the rectangle to a little less than halfway up the fabric.

I then took the short side without the slit down the middle and pinned it several times to the inside of the sweatband so that the good side of the fabric is facing up. Next I tried the sweatband on and put the two flaps over my shoulders. I folded the flaps in half and pinned them together so that the good side of the fabric was the only side that showed. Then I cut a snake shape out of a piece of cardboard and drew some eyes on it. I then attached it to the front of the sweatband using more pins.

For the tunic (not a skirt) two yards of white fabric turned out to be too much for me. I would have been OK with one and a half or maybe even one yard. I made a rectangle that was big enough to fit around my waist and rounded one of the bottom corners. I attached a gold ribbon to the top side of the rectangle using pins. I then took the remaining striped fabric from the headdress and cut it in half again to make to very long rectangles. I then attached these to the sides of the tunic, but left it unattached everywhere else so that they flow when you walk.

Finally, I pinned the tunic together in the middle and then pinned the ribbon together in the same place, and added some more pins down the front of the tunic to hold it together.
Finally, I cut some lengths of gold ribbon that were big enough the fit around my ankles, wrists, and neck to make my pharaoh jewelry. I simply pinned these together as well. And for shoes I just wore a pair of brown flip flops that I had. Now you are ready to Walk like an Egyptian all night long!

  1. Great Idea on the head piece. I am challenged to make a head piece that matches a white, blue and silver home-made costume… I would just buy, but every one I have seen is gold :(
