Homemade Princess Bride Wesley Costume for Man or Woman

One of my favorite movies is The Princess Bride. I wanted to go as a character from the movie, but I didn’t want to go as Buttercup because let’s face it Wesley is way cooler, plus my hair color and length is similar to Cary Elwes. With this costume I had people questioning my gender all night, but overall I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

The shirt was a woman’s blouse that I bought from a resale shop. It was several sizes too big for me to create the billowy sort of effect with a black tank underneath. The belt was a black scarf that I bought from Walmart and then tied around my waist. I wore black leggings and a pair of black boots that I already owned.
I made the mask myself because it is apparently impossible to find a simple black mask anywhere! To make the mask I molded tinfoil to my face and then used papier mache to create the mask (papier mache mix was flour and water and I used newspaper over the tinfoil).

After this I wrapped the mask in black felt that I bought from Walmart and cut out the eye holes (mine were a little bit sloppy because I didn’t have a decent Xacto knife). I stapled a rubber band to both sides so it stayed on my face. It worked very well and stayed on the entire night.

The head wrap (for lack of a better word) was a black T-shirt in a past life. I cut off the sleeves and cut the shirt in half so it formed a black square shape. Because I have long enough hair, I tied my hair back in a low ponytail and then pulled back the cloth and tied it around my ponytail with a leftover scrap of black fabric.
My final touches was the make up. I drew on a mustache using a mascara pencil.

I had a lot of fun with this costume! I even had a couple of strangers ask me to quote lines from the movie. The mask worked very well and fooled even my closest friends. Many of them thought that I was a boy. I’d call that a success!!
