Super Cute Flower Pot Costume

I am a preschool teacher at a hospital child care center. Every year my class and I dress up in our costumes and go Trick-or-Treating throughout the hospital. I love Halloween and I love dressing up for it even more! I get so excited about dressing up that I start looking for costume ideas in late August early September. I always make my own costumes and since I am a teacher I try to make them child friendly. I saw a costume of a little girl dressed like a flower pot and thought it was really cute and it looked pretty easy to make, so I decided to give it a try.

The materials for the costume were pretty simple: a large plastic flower pot (bottom cut out with a serrated knife), bunches of plastic flowers from the craft store, ribbon for suspenders and duct tape. I taped the flowers to the inside of the flower pot and taped the suspenders on as well. I then hot glued some flowers to a headband and voila! I’m a flower pot!

I was really surprised by the reactions I got. To be honest I wasn’t all that excited about how it turned out but I guess I was wrong. When I walked through the hospital, person after person said how much they loved my costume and how creative it was. I had people asking me if I made it and how I made it. A person I didn’t even know asked me if she could take a picture of my costume. So as much as I really appreciated the adult comments, what mattered most to me was that the kids in my class enjoyed my costume. They laughed and smiled as they saw their teacher dressed like a flower pot!

To me there is something special about a homemade Halloween costume. I love the idea of taking regular items and putting them together to make a truly unique and creative costume. So as long as I am a teacher, I will continue to make my own Halloween costumes that I hope will put a smile on the faces of every child in my class!
