Three-of-a-Kind Minion Siblings Halloween Costumes

My kids LOVE homemade costumes, every year for Halloween we’re on the proul to be unique. I came across alot of Minion costumes but none that stood out to me. So I decided to start creating and I knew I wanted my kids costumes to light up and I wanted to include a fan so that they would stay cool as they walked around through the night. I went out and purchased 2 Twin foam pads 2 bottles of yellow spray paint, 1 purple, 2 yards of blue flannel, 1 yard of black, a set of touch lights and LED computer fans. I started by cutting the foam in half, tracing a handmade template I made onto the top then cutting it. I hot glued about 12 inches of it starting from where I cut out the template. I put stuffing in it towards the template cutout. I glued it down to the stuffing creating a nice round dome looking head. I put it on my kids to see where to cut out a mouth and arm holes. Note: Do not use a black sharpie marker and its probably best to spray glue the entire body and use flannel it will look way better.I then cut out teeth with the left over of the mouth cutout. I glued them and also glued in velcor on the back of the opening. Make sure to use alot of glue. I spary painted it, painted the eyes and glued them on. I sewed the overall and attached it with spary glue. My kids loved their costumes, they were constantly stopped by alot of people to take their pictures and as we walked around we constantly kept hearing the minion noises by random people. It was sooo much fun, this was the best Halloween ever.

Tracing and closing the top

I used a twin size foam pad and I cut it in half, I then made a 6inch template that resembles a flower petal, I traced this all the way across, it should only come out to 11 petals on the foam. I cut out in between the petals. I then used hot glue to close it together, make sure that you use alot of glue. No glue dots.. glue about 8-12 inches only

stuffing, gluing and stitching

So now I put pillow stuffing inside of it, enough to form a dome, I glued the petals down onto the stuffing, one by one waiting fot each of them to dry, DO NOT glue them all down at once, you will burn yourself and won’t get that round look, be patient and it will look great.once the glue is dry and you have glued them all down grab a stitching needle and just go through the petals one time and tie it off. Just to secure that it wont come apart. Use a piece of fabric to cover the hole on the top, preferably white because your going to end up spray painting it anyway.

Securing the back and cutting the holes

I used velcor and hot glued it on to the back, i was ver very genorous with the glue because I wanted it on there really good. Don’t try sewing it because ti won’t stand the test of time. Glue works much better. Once both sides are glued, let dry and then close the costume up to see how the back will look. Place it on your child and draw on where you plan to cut out the arm holes and where the mouth is. Your childs face should be right in the center of the mouth. With the extra pieces that you just cut out, start making some teeth, use your scissors to bevel them out to give it a more realistic look.

Painting the eyes

I bought touch lights, they were reallyc cheap and come in a 4 pack, they do come with batteries but please change them with new ones because after 15 min they died out. I painted the eyes using acrylic paints that I already had and I finished it off with a clear coat of spray paint.

Spray paint and Placing the eye

I spray painted the costume yloow and I covered the teeth with painting tape. once you know where your eye will be going just hot glue it down, make sure only to glue around the battery compartment. You will cut a square shape from the inside of the head to change batteries as needed.

Last Steps

Sew overalls, make 2 pieces, pants and the the top. then sew that together its very simple. More detail looks very nice. Place the overal on the costume and when you have it right where you want it then spray glue inside of it, Do not take it off, just go around the costume and spray away.Make sure to cut a slit on the back of the overall and just tuck in the excess and hot glue it down close to the velcro closing. I used black head warmer headbands, they were only a dollar so I thought it was a great buy. cut it and glue it onto the head. For the hairs I just used black pipe cleaners and all I did was placed a dab of hot glue on the head and pushed the pipe cleaner down and in it went, like butter. Finally for the computer fan, I bought LED computer fans off of the internet and they were very cheap, I wired them to a 9volt battery ( I used a 9volt battery clip and just wired the red to the red and black to black using electrical tape to hold it together and made a little poket inside the costume to hold it in place. I just cut out a square of fabric and glued only 3 sides of it onto the inside of the costume. Easy peasy I used old yellow sweaters and cut off the sleeves and glued them in the costume. The whole process was fun. NOTE: On the purple minion the only difference is that I bought a $5.00 wig and teased it and spray painted it purple and it looked amazing.
