Cool Lobster Dinner Table Costume

This was my 9 year old daughter’s costume. It was all her idea from concept to execution with a little help from her 11 year old sister and myself. The costume was cheaper to make than buying one from a store.

My daughter wore this to her fall festival at school and got a tremendous reaction. People were lined up to take pictures. She thoroughly enjoyed the result. The whole costume only took about an hour to make. My daughters did most of the work. I was in charge of cutting the holes and putting duct tape around the sharp edges of the platter. We got the lobster hat online, everything else was from the dollar store.

Supply List and Step 1

  • Large piece of card
  • Foil platter
  • Duct tape
  • Plasticware place settings
  • Plastic or paper plates
  • Plastic glasses
  • Plastic salt and pepper shakers
  • Plastic table cloth
  • Lobster hat
  • Green tissue paper
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Step 1

  • Cut a head sized hole in a display board. You can use any piece of cardboard. If you use a large piece you may need to reinforce it underneath so it doesn’t bend when worn. We used rulers taped on with duct tape underneath.
  • Oddly enough my daughter thought her head was much larger than it actually was!

Step 2

Cover the card with a plastic table cloth, make sure to glue it to the board. Cut two slits in an X shape into the table cloth over the hole, where the head will come through. Make sure you can fit your head through the hole.

Step 3

Cut a hole in a foil platter and cover the sharp edges with duct tape. Glue green tissue paper to the platter to make lettuce. You could add tomatoes or other veggies if you like.

This was a great sisterly experience for the girls. There was no arguing over the lettuce.

Team work!

Step 4

Glue plastic ware, plates, glasses and salt and pepper shakers to the table. Make sure to lay out the settings before you glue.

My girls wanted to have dinner on the costume!

Bon Appetite

Try costume on. Head through the hole, platter around the neck, and top with a lobster hat.
