How to Make a Groot Mask for Under $10

Groot is the lovable protector in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Since my last name is De Groot, I had to find a way to be him for the holiday! But there were no Groot adult costumes anywhere in stores, so I had to make it. I wore this outfit out for a large Halloween event in Portland, OR and it was a huge hit! Everyone wanted to hug Groot, or have their picture taken with him. Here are the supplies needed:

  • hot glue gun
  • scissors
  • large cardboard box
  • postal paper
  • fake leaves
  • camo duct tape
  • strips of camo material
  • Velcro

Make outline of mask

Cut the shape of Groot’s face out of a large cardboard box, leaving a long cardboard tab attached to either side of his face to wrap around and attach behind your head. I added some padding under his nose to give it dimension, then covered it with postal paper to have a clean slate. Cut eye holes and a slit for the mouth.

Make the back of the mask

Tape the camouflage duct tape to the exposed parts of the back of the mask. Affix Velcro to both ends of the tabs to make the mask size adjustable. I also taped a piece of foam to the inside of the forehead area which made the mask much more comfortable to wear, and also kept the mask sitting a couple inches off my face.

Decorate the front of the mask!

Using a hot glue gun, glue pieces of bark to the front of the mask. Add some fake leaves here and there.

I put lettering on a brown hooded sweatshirt to say “I am Groot.” Anyone who has seen Guardians of the Galaxy knows that these are the only three words Groot can say, and I thought it added a fun element to the ensemble. Let’s be honest, making a suit out of real bark is just not practical. And the mask is outstanding on its own, so this is all it needed. I also cut some camouflage strips of material and glued one strip to each finger of a glove, to make the gloves look like tree branches.
